My Top Quilting and Sewing Tips and Tricks

Image
My Top Quilting Tips and Tricks - Tape on Rulers -   Before I had washi tape, I would use painters tape.  When cutting mass amounts of fabric this helps me make fewer mistakes. It's also one other way to make things a bit more colorful. I still usually keep a piece or two on rules to make those irregular cuts a little easier. - Chain Piecing -   I love this. Seriously. I love this. I almost can't stand not chain piecing now. It saves string and makes the smaller parts come together faster. - Leader Scrap Piece for Chain Piecing -   For smaller pieces, which I've slowly become addicted to, this is wonderful.  It helps on so many levels and aids when chain piecing blocks get down to the last few seams that need to be sewn. - Pressing Seams Open -  I love doing this for small piecing projects, triangles, and anything with a great amount of detail.  I also love how flat the material lays when this technique is used.   - Nesting Seams - O

Mini Quilts - Halloween Mug Rugs

Image
Mini Quilts Halloween Mug Rugs I already have a Halloween themed table runner, but had some scraps and a few fat quarters laying around.  My love of hexagons in quilting and spiders in general got the better of me and this idea sprang to mind. I cut various strips out of three different gray Halloween fabrics.  The sizes being 1 inch, 1 1/4 inch, and 1 1/2 inch.  I then arranged them into groupings of four before sewing.   I then used my 60 degree equilateral triangle ruler to cut them into triangles. You can also use the grid lines on cutting mats as most have 60 degree lines and 45 degree lines. But for simplicity sake, I have the triangle ruler. Because I kept the sizing of the strips random, and the organizing of the groupings random, I ended up with three hexagons measuring about 6 inches and three measuring about 7 inches.  I meant for these to be rather scrappy looking, so I don't mind the size variance.  However, if you're going for a more order

Fall Mini Quilt

Image
Fall Mini Quilt In the haze of family health issues, I've some how managed to get into a fall quilting feel. Quilting has and continues to be a sort of therapy for me and this mini quilt is no exception.  The design of this was initially intended to be a wall hanging, but so far I'm using it as a table topper on the coffee table. It's a simple design that fuels my love for star blocks and lots of color.  I used pins to baste this little piece. I really have been loving using pins, there's less mess and they're reusable.  For the backing I used a brown batik fabric to keep things simple.  A little machine quilting later... Hubby and I both agree, our frequent trips to New Mexico have definitely influenced the quilting patterns on this little guy.   Happy creating, and happy quilting! Deployment To Do List - A Wrap Up

Image
9 Month Deployment To Do List In preparing for hubby's first deployment, I read a lot, a lot of blog posts, articles, and books. One of the many things that stuck with me was making a to do list.  And as much as I love lists and list making that was one thing that got me excited about being able to get through his first deployment. I have a more intensive physical list that I kept track of everything on; this is a simplified, polished list. It really helped me keep my sanity and keep me motivated. If you or a loved one are going through something similar, I highly recommend making your own list. I was highly impressed and inspired by Jo's list from Jo, My Gosh, found here , from when her husband was deployed. So here's my list and what I was able to accomplish! Personal: - Keep a journal, write in it two to three times a week. ( 36 / 72-108 ) - Write two to three blog posts a month. ( 32 /18-27 ) - Finish editing poems. ( Not Done ) - Submit poems
