Art Haul: March 2017

Image
The short version: there was a sale at Joann's, and I have no self control.  Well, I could have done more damage, but I showed a moderate amount of restraint. As usual, I went into Joann's to get more material for a quilt, and then the rest of the store called to me. I'm currently working on a baby t-shirt quilt, and it is one of the most challenging quilts I've worked on. I'm trying to make it perfect, when I know it just needs to be good. If you can't see it from a running horse, it's fine. I keep telling myself that. I got one gray, two blue, one aqua, two green, two yellow, two orange, and one red to help finish the quilt.  Hopefully, now I have enough material to fully finish the top.  I had been thinking of getting these for a long time, as sandwiching quilts usually kills my hands.  Hubby pushed me to get these by reminding me it's ok to treat myself. I also had a coupon, so they went in the cart. I can't wait to t

Art Journaling: Journal52 - Truth

Journal 52 - Week 10 - Truth For this prompt, I wanted to do something different than my normal pages. I saw a lot of the beautiful pages that were put up on the Facebook page and I loved them, but I wasn't struck with inspiration yet.  So, I decided that instead of doing a slightly serious quote with my usual colors, I wanted to go outside my normal box.  I wanted to go in a funny direction and with colors that I normally don't use.  That's when one of my favorite quotes from That 70's Show came to mind: "There's this car, man. It runs on water man!" Naturally, I couldn't help myself.  To create the spread, I first put down a thin layer of watered down gesso in a swirling pattern.  I then took several oranges, yellows, greens, and a few teals to create the back ground.  I did several layers of water color washes and splatters to build up the pigments.  I used a large sharpie marker to do the text.  To

Art Journaling: Celebrating Love - ft Love in Oranges

Image
For this art journal spread I used my digital down load set of "Love in Oranges" for the quote and focal images. You can find the one I used for this page here and a few others that I designed here!  These are great additions to art journaling days where I really need some help with inspiration. For this spread, I was simply inspired by love and just wanted to make something pink.  I usually don't a lot of pink or orange in my art journaling pages, but I wanted to break that pattern with this happy spread. For these pages, I started with gluing down torn pieces of different scrap papers that I had in my stash. I used various letter stamps and swirled stamps with black and purple inks.  This is a great way to lay down physical and visual texture throughout the spread. I then went over the pages with watered down gesso to prep the pages for watercolor paints.  When the gesso was dry, I painted various oranges, pinks, reds, and purples rando

Art Journaling: Mission Inspiration, March 2017

Image
Mission Inspiration - March 2017 March 2017: 1. Apply patterned paper or tissue. 2. Add thin coat of a suggested colour. 3. Use a stencil with medium of your choice. 4. Add a focal image. 5. Use at least 2 rubber / clear stamps. 6. Make marks with a credit / atm card. 7. Add a quote / title or phrase. 8. Add a frame or border. Suggested colors: green, yellow, brown Inspiration words: Spring, Regeneration, Germination, Jump, Madness For the first step, I tore and glued down music sheet patterned paper with green music notes from a 12" by 12" Heirloom Stack by DCWV that I got from Joan's a long time ago. For the second step, without putting down gesso, I applied watercolor paint in two greens. And since I couldn't help myself before the paint dried I did add a few splatters of the green paints to bring some more texture into the spread. For the third step, I used the stencil below and filled in the

Dealing with Separation

Image
Before we were married, hubby and I knew we'd have to deal with various times of separation.  Military life is like that, and it's not for everyone.  It can take a lot out of you and your spouse. Within our first year of dating, about one third of our time together was spent physically apart. Various training, field exercises, and deployments add up over time.  And it's taken me awhile to get a pattern down that helps me get through these times of separation. To combat the feeling that my life is on pause while hubby's away, I've started making lists for each separation. Making a personal list helps me stay on track, helps remind me that even though my favorite person is temporarily gone, I can still kick butt, be happy, be successful and I should never feel bad about what I accomplish while he's gone.  The real success to my list method is to set a list that is realistic for me to mostly complete and to create a varied list.  To keep my lists realisti

Art Journaling: Journal52 - Week 9

Journal 52 - Week 9 - Emerge For this art journal, I managed to keep the process and spread relatively simple.  To start, I glued down strips of different ads in blues, navy, and white, along with a logo from a paper bag. I then covered the whole spread with watered down white gesso. I then used water color paints in blues, with spots of black and teal. When that was dry, I stamped the phrase "When patterns are broken new worlds emerge" with a Martha Stewart stamp set.  I added small lines of circles and dots using a Micron 01 pen and a Sharpie.  I inked the edges with a black ink pad, date stamped and initialed it, to finish it.   Happy creating, and happy art journaling!
