Art Journaling: Journal52 - Week 3

Image
Journal 52 - Week 3 - Strange To prep the pages I first glued down strips of a brown paper bag.  The prompt of doing something strange with a known medium was fulfilled by my attempts to use gesso on a circle stamp.  It worked in the end, but at first I was expecting, for some reason for the gesso to be applied a lot smoother.  Instead it left a great texture which I wasn't planning on but worked even better. I tried various water color paints and wasn't getting the color pay off as I hadn't gesso-ed or prepped the whole page.  I switched to acrylic paints of yellow, orange and purple. I had not previous used acrylic paint in art journaling but very much so enjoyed using it on this layout.  After spreading acrylic paint on with a flat large pallet knife, I went back to water color paints. Mainly adding yellow and a fuchsia toned purple to blend the back ground and take out any white left over.  I tried some splatters with the water co

Hanging Photos and Frames - PCS Tips

Image
With every PCS move, Photos and frames go up and down. I've developed a simple but easy way to make this last step of moving in, even easier.  In our house, as I'm sure in most houses, we have lots of pieces that are hung throughout the house. We have a few historical framed pieces, a few paintings, and a few framed plagues and work things from my hubby's work in the Army.  Putting up framed pieces and shelving are always the last things to be finished with each move.  To make this a bit easier, I've made patterns of some of our main pieces that are the same size of the framed pieces and have the location of where the nail goes in relation to the back of the frame. For our pieces, I've used sheets of large trace that I have left over from college. The plaques, oath of office, diplomas, and framed historical military documents are just a few examples of the pieces we have patterns of. These come with us each move and a

Art Journaling: Journal52 - Week 2

Image
One of my creative goals this year is to do more art journaling.  I've recently gotten into Journal52 's weekly prompts and Mike Deakin's monthly prompts in Mission Inspiration.  For Journal52 's second weekly prompt , I put this together with various purples and Jeremiah 29:11 in mind for the hope aspect.  I might not do all of the prompts from Journal52 and Mike Deakin, but I like having their prompts available when I need that push of inspiration. Journal 52 - Week 2 - Hope To prep the pages I used circle die cuts of old text book pages, bits of torn tissue paper, tea bag wrappers before going over with white gesso and various purple water color paints.  I then added scraps of magazine pieces to add to the corners and focal point. I used small letter stamps with Distressed purple ink on scrap trace paper for the focal point of "hope." For the verse, I used a black Faber Castell pen instead of printing it.  I wanted to em

A "To Do" Monthly Calendar

Image
What you'll need: Frame: Good will, the dollar store, or whatever you like. If you're planning on attaching magnets for the fridge, make sure it's a light frame. Back ground: Craft paper, plain paper with markers and paints, whatever goes with your style! Ruler and colored markers of your choosing. List of things you want to complete each month. With each PCS move our bill payment days change. We usually can get into a rhythm fairly well but this calendar, that lives on our fridge, is such a help to keeping us on track. It's a great visual reminder with our ever changing schedules. I start by figuring out how many columns and how many rows I'll need for the whole year. For the columns (think architectural column - vertical) I need one for each month, one for the bill name, and one for it's due date; 14 in total. For the rows, (think rowing a boat, horizontal) I need one for the labels on the top of the chart, one for each month, and a blank

Projects of 2017 - An Optimistic List.

Image
This is more or less my version of a resolution list.   I never really keep New Year’s resolutions, and rarely make them around the New Year. I feel if you want to have positive change in your life, there is never a better time than the present.   That being said, I do like to list out my projects near the beginning and end of the year as a way of reflecting over what has happened throughout that given year. Quilting – I’d like to start and finish my rain themed, twin-sized quilt that’s been sitting in my closet for some time. The top has been finished and waiting to be hand stitched. I partially like to blame my inability to figure out a pattern of quilting for it as why I’ve put off finishing it for so long. I think I’ve finally settled on a pattern that has renewed my excitement for the project. I’d like to start quilting on my civil war, queen-sized quilt.   I finished the top of this several year long project last summer. Now that we have a queen-sized bed
